What do birds really eat in the wild? Discover the diets of Quebec's bird species

Have you ever wondered what birds eat when they're not at your feeders? Although we often see them pecking at sunflower seeds or suet, the reality is that most of their diet comes from nature. Insects, wild berries, acorns… each species has developed a diet adapted to the Quebec seasons.




The Northern Cardinal is primarily granivorous, consuming seeds from wild plants.

It also feeds on spiders and insects such as grasshoppers, cicadas, and caterpillars.

In spring and summer, it adds small wild fruits, like blackberries, to its menu.


Unusual fact: In some male cardinals, molting can sometimes cause the sudden loss of all head feathers, giving the bird a bald appearance. This phenomenon, though surprising, is natural and harmless.

However, it gives the cardinal an unusual appearance, contrasting sharply with its vibrant red plumage. The baldness usually lasts only a few days to a few weeks, until new feathers grow back.




In spring and summer (breeding season), the Black-capped Chickadee prefers insect eggs, larvae, and pupae.

In late summer, it begins to cache food by hiding it under tree bark or in lichen patches. It can even remember the location of its cache up to 28 days later.


Unusual fact: The Black-capped Chickadee can lower its body temperature during cold nights, a mechanism called torpor. This allows it to conserve energy and survive extreme winter conditions.




The White-breasted Nuthatch feeds on insect larvae, seeds, and small fruits. Like the chickadee, it caches food for tougher days. In winter, it can also feed on conifer cone seeds, thanks to its specialized beak.


Unusual fact: Unlike most climbing birds, the White-breasted Nuthatch can descend tree trunks headfirst. It uses this unique technique to spot insects that other birds (who only climb upwards) cannot see.

This behavior is often visible in winter, when the leaves have fallen.

This head-down movement is characteristic of the entire Sitta genus, not just the White-breasted Nuthatch .




Woodpeckers primarily eat insects: beetles, ants, caterpillars, larvae, and spiders.

In summer and autumn, they also consume small fruits. Their powerful beaks allow them to drill into wood to find food.


Unusual fact: In woodpeckers (like the Downy Woodpecker, in the photo, or the Hairy Woodpecker), the tongue is so long that it wraps around the back of the skull, sometimes even behind the eyes. It passes through a special sheath, much like a biological seatbelt!

The woodpecker detects weakened or infested areas of a trunk where insects are most abundant. It therefore often targets diseased or dead trees, which helps naturally control forest pests.


By eating xylophagous (wood-eating) insects, the woodpecker protects trees from infestations. It is an important player in forest ecological balance.




The American Goldfinch is a granivore, fond of seeds from wild plants such as thistles and sunflowers .

In summer, it also eats insects: caterpillars, fly larvae, and wasps.


Unusual fact: Let's travel to Europe to discover another finch, a cousin of our goldfinch. In the 18th century, European Goldfinches were not only admired for their plumage or their song: they were trained to pull tiny buckets of water with a string, to turn small mills, or even to open boxes like miniature artists.

In bourgeois salons and curiosity cabinets, these clever birds were also trained to operate tiny instruments (tambourines, bells, even small cymbals) to produce rhythmic sounds, almost like mechanical music.

They could even be seen turning wheels, pulling miniature chariots, or triggering automatons, all within custom-made small theatrical scenes.




The Blue Jay, on the other hand, eats everything: wild fruits, seeds, insects, frogs, snails, caterpillars, mice, eggs, and even nestlings. Its robust beak allows it to crack acorns, nuts, and other hard-shelled fruits. It also likes to hide its food in trees or under leaves.


Unusual fact : It's not really blue! The blue we see on a blue jay is an optical effect! Its feathers do not contain blue pigment. The color comes from the diffraction of light on the structure of the plumes.

They hide acorns everywhere to eat later. It is thought that they played a role in the dispersal of oak trees after the last ice age!




Birds are resourceful and find everything they need in nature. Feeders can be useful in winter, especially during ice storms, when natural food is hard to find. However, birds do not depend on us: studies show that feeders account for only 20% of their diet, compared to 80% from nature.


Feeding birds mainly allows us to observe them better and learn more about their behavior and habits. It's a beautiful way to get closer to the natural world.
