House Finches were consuming and wasting a lot of seed on my existing safflower seed feeder. So I tried the Unique Cardinal Feeder. Took about 2 weeks for the cardinals to become familiar and comfortable with the feeder with the port held open and a week after closing it. Female cardinals took to it more quickly - males were more wary of the tilt mechanism. I made by own 'seed catcher tray' with some PVC pipe and threaded fittings. It definitely helped. The feeder does exclude smaller birds like House and Purple Finches and Chickadees. I have yet to see any larger bird (e.g Dove) try to land on the perch or seed dish while it has been hung on my deck. I made a short YouTube video entitled "Northern Cardinals on 'Unique Cardinal Feeder' 3rd April 2022". |

I was very excited to get this feeder in the summer. I've had it up for about a month but the Cardinals haven't approached it yet. They come to my yard every day to use another feeder that they are used to. I sometimes see House Finches, House Sparrows and even Goldfinches perching on this Cardinal feeder, looking all around to figure out how to get the seed inside (so cute!) but of course I got this one with the hope that the Cardinals could have a feeder of their own, so I'm glad the House Finches and House Sparrows can't consume all of its contents within a few hours like they do with my other feeders. I'm not completely confident these local Ontario Cardinals will ever use this feeder -- it seems they are terrified of everything. Even if they approach this feeder I can't imagine they'll stay perched on it after the perch drops, but I will continue to keep an eye it with the hope they'll find the courage to try it out! I hope it works! |
