Welcome to our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)!

Have you ever wondered how to attract more birds, keep feeders clean, or stop squirrels from taking over your backyard? You’re not alone. At Nature Expert, we get these questions every day from bird lovers across Québec. That’s why we’ve put together this Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) guide—so you can find clear, practical solutions to the most common challenges in backyard birding.

Check back often: we update this FAQ based on your questions and feedback.

1 – I live in the city and don’t have a large backyard. Can I still attract a wide variety of birds?

Yes! Even in Montréal apartments or small yards, you can welcome many species. Try attaching feeders to a clothesline with a carabiner—harder for squirrels to reach. Or install a window feeder with suction cups. Some models include a dome to block larger birds, letting chickadees, finches, and cardinals feed safely.

2 – How can I prevent animals from knocking feeders to the ground?

Always secure feeders with a lockable carabiner. It keeps raccoons and squirrels from unscrewing the feeder while still making it easy for you to refill and clean.

3 – Too many seeds end up on the ground. How can I reduce the mess?

The type of seed matters. Cheap mixes often contain milo, a filler birds discard. Instead, use black oil sunflower or hulled sunflower seeds—favorites for many Québec birds and less wasteful. Adding a seed catcher tray also reduces mess and deters large flocks from feeding on spilled seed.

4 – How can I protect feeders from large birds and squirrels but still allow smaller birds to feed?

Use a squirrel-proof cage feeder. These models let in chickadees, woodpeckers, and finches while blocking squirrels, starlings, and grackles.
