The Droll Yankees Flipper is a weight-activated squirrel-proof feeder: when a squirrel lands on the perch, it starts to spin, causing the rodent to fall off and discouraging it from returning. The mechanism does not activate for light weights like that of a bird.

Feeder placement:
The feeder should be placed away from balcony railings, posts, and trees. This way, the squirrel will have to put its full weight on the perch, causing it to lower. The minimum recommended distance is 18'', but a greater distance may be desirable. The activation of the anti-squirrel mechanism depends on weight, so if the squirrel can stretch out and place only part of its weight on the feeder, it might not activate the mechanism.
Red squirrels and chipmunks are not heavy enough to activate the mechanism. If you want to maximize the chances that they cannot access the seeds, position your feeder so that they will have to jump to reach it.
Place your feeder within 30 feet of trees and shrubs if possible. Birds will feel more secure as they can quickly take cover when predators approach.
