This feeder runs on a rechargeable battery. When a bird like a cardinal or woodpecker lands on this feeder, the device does not activate, but as soon as a squirrel jumps on it, the feeder's perches start to spin to make the squirrel fall off and discourage it from returning.

Feeder Placement

• The feeder should be placed away from balcony railings, posts, and trees. This way, the squirrel will have to put its full weight on the perch, causing it to lower. The recommended minimum distance is 14 inches, but a greater distance may be desirable. The activation of the anti-squirrel mechanism depends on weight, so if the squirrel is able to stretch out and place only part of its weight on the feeder, it might not activate the mechanism.
  
• Red squirrels and chipmunks are not heavy enough to lower the perches. If you want to maximize the chances that they cannot access the seeds, place your feeder so that they will have to jump to reach it.
  
• Place your feeder at a distance of no more than 30 feet from trees and shrubs if possible. Birds will feel more secure because they can quickly take cover when predators approach.
