What is Feeder Fresh, and why should I use it?

Feeder Fresh absorbs moisture, helping to preserve seeds in bird feeders. It is safe for birds and can be placed directly in bird feeders or grain storage bins to reduce the negative effects of moisture, such as clumping, mold growth, and seed spoilage.

Feeder Fresh supports the health of wild birds by keeping bird feeders dry and reducing the risk of mold and harmful toxins. Poorly maintained bird feeders are one of the most common sources of mycotoxins.

Is Feeder Fresh safe for birds?

Absolutely!

· Feeder Fresh is non-toxic. It is made from sand and is highly absorbent.

· The main ingredient in Feeder Fresh, amorphous silica, is already consumed by birds in their natural habitat and is even necessary for strong eggshells. It is one of the safest materials in the world.

· Feeder Fresh was developed with bird safety in mind. The product’s manufacturers conducted extensive research to ensure that it is not harmful to birds and is, in fact, beneficial to their health. The product has been approved by Dr. Kirk Klasing, an avian physiologist at the University of California.

· Birds can recognize that Feeder Fresh granules are not seeds. When they come into contact with a granule, they simply toss it aside. If they were to eat one, the particle would pass through their gizzard just like sand. Feeder Fresh does not swell or clump.

· The product does not contain crystalline silica.

How does Feeder Fresh work?

Feeder Fresh has a microporous sponge-like structure, meaning it contains billions of pores measuring just a few nanometers across that easily absorb water and moisture. These pores absorb water directly or draw in excess moisture from the air and seeds, creating a sealed, dry space.

What types of bird feeders can I use Feeder Fresh in?

You can use Feeder Fresh in any enclosed bird feeder. The more enclosed the feeder is, the more effective the product will be. For example, all silo feeders are designed for use with Feeder Fresh. Place the product at the bottom of the feeder.

How should this product be used?

For best results, place the product in the area of your feeder where moisture or mold problems usually occur. This is most often at the bottom of the feeder, especially if seeds tend to settle there. If placing the product at the bottom of the feeder is difficult, it can be mixed with the seeds at the bottom or layered throughout the feeder.

General directions for use:

1. Clean and disinfect your feeder.

2. Pour a layer of Feeder Fresh at the bottom of the feeder, between ¼ and ½ inch thick. The amount of product needed depends on the extent of the moisture problem and the size of the feeder and the areas where seed flow is low.

3. For best results, you can also sprinkle a little product over the seeds each time you fill the feeder.

4. Replace the product as needed when you clean and maintain your feeder. The amount of product needed over time will depend on weather conditions and the amount of moisture that enters the feeder (i.e., the size of the holes and whether there is a dome over the feeder). If moisture problems persist, you may not be using enough product, replacing it often enough, or placing it in the right spot.

You can also use Feeder Fresh in your grain storage containers to help keep the grain fresh longer and prevent it from absorbing moisture.

How often should I replace the Feeder Fresh in my feeder?

Replace the Feeder Fresh at the bottom of your feeder if:

· You notice that the Feeder Fresh looks darker or translucent as it absorbs moisture.

· The product has been in the feeder for more than a month.

 

· The product has been in the feeder for more than a week, and there has been heavy rain.

How can Feeder Fresh improve the health of wild birds?

You may already know that some of the most toxic substances on earth are produced by mold. Even trace amounts of these mycotoxins can have harmful or even fatal effects on birds. For example, 0.0001 mg of aflatoxin, a byproduct of Aspergillus parasiticus mold that grows on grain, can be enough to kill small birds. The more grain is exposed to moisture, the greater the risk of aflatoxin production. Feeder Fresh keeps the grain and the feeder dry and prevents mold growth, reducing the risk of aflatoxin and other mycotoxins.
