It is recommended to use wood shavings at the bottom of nest boxes for chickadees, nuthatches, and downy woodpeckers. It is recommended to put one inch of wood shavings at the bottom of each nest box. One bag of shavings will be enough for one nest box.
For wood duck nest boxes, 4 inches of wood shavings are recommended at the bottom of the nest box, or 5 bags.
For Eastern Screech Owl nest boxes, 2 to 3 inches of wood shavings are recommended at the bottom of the nest box, or 3 bags.
