Safflower is a hard-shelled seed, difficult for birds with fine beaks to de-hull. Ideal for attracting cardinals who love it, it is on the other hand not very appreciated by sparrows, starlings and squirrels.

To attract only cardinals, try the unique cardinal feeder which will filter the species that have access to the feeder.
