Safflower is a seed with a hard shell that is difficult for birds with thin beaks to crack open. Ideal to attract northen cardinals, which love it, it is however not very popular with sparrows, starlings, and squirrels.

To attract only cardinals, try the unique cardinal feeder, which filters out other species from accessing the feeder.

Le carthame, pas sensé attirer les moineaux et/ou les écureuils? J'en ai mis pour la première fois dans une de mes mangeoires à silo et c'est l'orgie: plein de moineaux qui les mangent avec entrain. Translation: Safflower is supposed to not attract House Sparrows or squirrels. I put some for the first time in one of my feeders and it was pandemonium: lots of House Sparrows were gladly eating it.
